Fish. Forest. Family.

Our Family. Our Fishery. Our Home.

We’re a small family commercial fishing operation based in Kasilof, Alaska. Each season, we head to Kodiak to fish for salmon around Kodiak Island, working from a small family boat and making our living on the water.

Commercial fishing is a way of life for our family. Most of the salmon we catch goes to the cannery, becoming part of the larger Alaska seafood industry. A portion of our catch takes a different path and it becomes the birch-smoked salmon we’re able to share directly with you.

From the Water to the Smokehouse

Birch-smoked salmon brings together two parts of Alaska that are important to our family: the fishery and the forest.

We smoke our salmon with birch, creating a product that reflects the place where we live and work. It’s a simple connection between the fish we catch, the forests we value, and the people who enjoy the finished product.

We’re proud to offer one retail product rather than trying to turn our fishing operation into something it isn’t. Our focus is on doing a few things well and sharing a piece of our life in Alaska with you.

Looking After the Places That Support Us

Making a living from the land and water also makes us think about what we're leaving behind.

Through Crooked Creek Birch, we’re working to preserve birch forests that are at risk of being lost to land development. We believe forests have value beyond what can be measured by a property line or a development plan, and we want to find ways to keep these places standing.

We’re also looking for practical ways to reduce our impact on the marine environment.

That includes researching ways to reduce marine debris, finding ways to recover debris from the places where we fish, reducing emissions from our operation, and exploring technologies such as electric refrigerated seawater systems for small commercial fishing boats.

We’re Still Figuring It Out

We don’t have all the answers.

Some ideas will work. Some won't. Some will take time.

Our goal is to keep looking, testing, learning, and sharing what we discover. We want to find solutions that actually make sense for a small working fishing operation.

For us, stewardship isn't separate from making a living in Alaska. It's part of the responsibility that comes with it.

From Our Family to Yours

Thank you for taking an interest in what we do.

When you buy our birch-smoked salmon, you’re supporting a small family fishing operation and helping us continue building something that connects the water, the forest, and the next generation.

From Alaska, to your table.
